My First Lesson In Jui Jitsu

Have you ever wondered what jui jitsu really is? Well I did and I found out yesterday. As a professional athlete in the NFL I had to have an ego which, in this sport, is even more important….but only in some instances. For example in football you can excell by simply being brutally strong and fierce because you can overpower your opponenet if you posses greater athletic ability. Try that in jui jistu and you’ll be tapping sooner than you think. Although I am absolutely nowhere near an expert in what jui jistu is I feel that with my first taste I can comprehend how much goes into it physically and more importantly, mentally.

You see I was training with Ricardo Barros of Ricardo Barros Brazilian Jui Jitsu (RBBJJ.com) who is a very accomplished black belt who I am currently training for his fight on September 24th, 2010, and it was my turn to take some of the pain I had been dishing out to him. We simply started from our knees with the goal of putting the other person their back. How simple a concept right? Well let’s just say it’s easier said then done. Backing up a but, I have never wrestled in my life, except one year when I was 8 and my mom had me in a purple singlet…thx mom, but I stopped and never went back. The difference in this sport is that you must have an ego to compete, but your brute strength can only take you so far. It is so technical that even though I was much stronger I could not seem to get him off of me at all. Its like he was playing with me….and he was.

I started by trying to get to his back, then he rolled. So I tried to get to his guard, and he almost chokes me. Next I go for his side and before I can even get settled his leg are locked around me like a pittbulls jaws. This went on for what seemed like 20 minutes before I was gassed and he was still ready to roll. Where did all of my great athletic abilities come into play? Nowhere because his technique was flawless. It’s as if he was in my head and knew exactly what my next move would be and how to use his body positioning to creat pressure and space so that I was actually using my OWN force and strength against myself. The more I grunted and struggled the easier it was for him, I guess that’s what you gain after 15 years of practice and competition. There’s an infinite amount to learn in this “gentle art”.

I definitely look forward to going back because it’s a hell of a work out….both physically AND mentally. Have a great weekend.

Testimonial from Gina Leslie

“Anthony Trucks’s resume is pretty impressive at first glance: NFL athlete, Division I athlete, impressive Oregon college degree, a list of the most sought after certifications, and now current owner and strength coach of his own facility Trucks Training in the Bay Area. However, this resume really does not really do him justice. The man behind Trucks Training is more than just an athlete, more than just a smart guy, more than just a business owner, and more than just a coach. He is a man of character. Since he has stepped on the football field at Oregon he has been a silent leader and touching the lives of others not through lengthy speeches, not through his words, but rather through his actions. During his time at Oregon, Anthony received praise for his accomplishments on and off the field. He did this all while being a young husband and father. Never once did he ask anyone for help, never once did he give into the temptations that surround the sports world, and never once did he speak of his accolades. After a career ending injury with the Steelers Antony opened his own training facility in the Antioch area. How can it really be that different from all the others sports training facilities? I could try to sale you on the fact that you have a real athlete, with a real degree, with real certifications designing successful programs for just about any sport you could think of. I could tell you that he has hired some of the best trainers and coaches around who care about the kids and young men and women they train. While this is all true, its not what I believe to be Trucks Training greatest selling point. You want your son to know what it means to be man? You want your daughter to learn what it means to have a backbone? Send them to Trucks Training. They are going to learn more than just how to be the best athlete. They are going to learn a thing or two about integrity, character, and the fight it takes to make it in this world.” August 13, 2010

Five keys to a PHENOMENAL football season

It’s a perfectly calm summer day. In the distance is an approaching click clack, and as the sun beats down you see it’s reflection off of multiple shining domes as they get closer and closer. Then out of nowhere a shrill whistle breaks the silence, it’s time! The next moments are filled with frantic yelling, moving, and more whistles. If you’re like any of the millions of Americans you know what this means, it’s football season. This time of the year is sometimes looked at as the preparation phase for the season, wrong.

My name is Anthony Trucks and I am an Antioch native who attended college at the university of Oregon where I earned a bachelors degree with focuses in biology anatomy and human physiology before moving on to play In the NFL with the buccaneers under John gruden, the redskins under hall of fame coach Joe Gibbs, and the steelers under coach Mike Tomlin before my career was cut short due to a shoulder injury which prompted me to use my education, and some of the highest training certifications in the world, to open a training facility for athletes in Antioch. I have spent the last 15 years of my life preparing both myself and other athletes for football season and let me tell you, if you have waited until now to prepare for this upcoming season then you are about 6 months behind. The preparation for this season began the moment the last second ticked off of your final games clock.

The good news is that you still have time to get ready. Odds are If you’re like most youth and high school athletes you have been playing other sports during the football offseason which has probably kept you in decent enough shape to be prepared for preseason football practice and conditioning. The most important thing you can do now, whether you have or have not prepared, is to take great care of your body and create the optimal environment to get into and/or stay in shape.

Five keys to a phenomenal football season:

Key 1: Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate (drink, drink, drink)
when you get thirsty it’s already too late, which means you should be drinking fluids before you feel the need to. Also make sure to get as much good old H2O in there and not just sugary sports drinks. Sports drinks are good during practice and games about every 15 mins if possible, and immediately after to replenish the electrolytes you lose because sweat is more than just water. The closer you get to dehydration the quicker your physical athletic ability declines, as well as your ability to focus and process mentally.

Key 2: Eat correctly and often
I know it seems cliche to say but you are what you eat. High school and youth nutrition is so bad I sometimes don’t even know where to start with fixing it. Often times they either barely eat or simply eat horribly. If you want to play and practice at your optimal level you must put the right fuel into your body. Start by decreasing the trips to the fast food joints and eating all those sweets. Your in-season diet should consists of good carbs for energy throughout those long practices and games, protein to keep and possibly build muscle mass throughout the season, and a multivitamin source to make sure all of your bodies systems are operating correctly.

Key 3: Sleep
And strive for sleep consistency. Without proper recovery time you won’t be able to let those sore muscles recover and that fast paced mind relax. You may also feel tired throughout the day which leaves minimal energy for games and practices that usually take place in the evening. Once you can get your body on a consistent sleep regimen your body will adapt and be able to take more advantage of the sleep it gets, so get to bed earlier and often.

Key 4: don’t stop training
Now I don’t mean to continue training as hard and intense as you did in the off/pre season but you must continue using the muscles you spent so much time building and conditioning or they will say “bye, bye”. Once season starts most athletes and coaches get so caught up in practice and games that they neglect the one most important tool needed for any of them to take place, the athletes body. Maintenance is key because if you want yourself or your athletes to get to that championship game and compete like it’s the first game of the season your going to need the same athletic abilities that got you there: lightning speed, brute strength, and explosive power. In this case the old adage is true: if you don’t use it, you lose it. So make sure at least once a week you get back to that weight room and pump some iron.

Key 5: conditioning
How do you or your team feel when you hold up the oh so famous “four fingers” at the end of the third quarter? When it comes to dominating your opponent in the fourth quarter the key ingredient is, you guessed it, running. The team that is in better shape has the best opportunity to prevail in the end. The one problem you’ll find is that most youth and high school coaches spend too much time in this area given the short amount of practice time they’re alotted. An easy and more time efficient way is to have players do what no coach has ever complained about, finish at the ball!!!! On every snap of every play make every single player get to the ball as fast as humanly possible, yes the lineman too. Whether it’s a long bomb to a receiver that he does or doesn’t catch or, a run by a running back that always reaches the end zone (he gets up and finishes if he’s tackled) This builds two priceless attributes: 1) athletes get into shape doing movements that relate directly to what they will be doing on game day 2) it builds a second nature instinct that compels an athlete to get to the ball to either make that touchdown saving tackle or, that touchdown springing block.

So there you have it, my five keys to a phenomenal season to give yourself the best chance for the best season of your life. Now when you touch that field you’ll be confident in saying these words. ” I’m the baddest man on this field, so come get some!! ” …….unless of course you happen to be playing against me.
